Practice Pointers

Here are some reminders about the services we offer and how to make best use of them:

Appointments

We offer on-the-day appointments and a limited number of appointments booked up to two weeks ahead. Phone lines for appointments open at 8.30am and again at 1.30pm. Please do remember to cancel your appointment if you are no longer able to attend.

GP appointments are normally at ten minute intervals. This does mean that it may not always be possible to deal with a long list of problems in a single appointment. We appreciate you help in trying to keep to these times to avoid long waits. We do apologies for those times when you are kept waiting. This is usually because something unforeseen has occurred or a patient has needed more time because of a serious or complicated medical problem.

Telephone consultations

If you want to speak to a doctor but not necessarily actually see the doctor then you can book a telephone consultation. This may be especially appropriate if you need to report your progress or discuss test results.

Nurse Practitioner

The practice employs a Nurse Practitioner who is a highly qualified member of the team and has expertise in diagnosing and treating acute illness and also is involved in the care of patients with chronic diseases, especially diabetes and heart disease. You may be offered an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner if appropriate.

Out of Hours

GP's are contracted to provide a medical service between 8.00am and 6.30p Monday to Friday. If you have an urgent medical problem that needs attention outside of these hours then an Out of Hours Service will attend to you. This can be accessed by phoning the surgery number or by contacting NHS Direct on 08454647.

Contraception

The practice offers a range of contraceptive services including the prescribing of oral contraceptives and the fitting of IUD or IUS. If you wish to discuss contraception then do make a appointment with one of the nurses, the nurse practitioner or with a GP.

Chronic Disease Clinics

We run regular clinics in the practice for a number of chronic illnesses including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. Patients being treated for these problems will usually be offered at least an annual review to make sure these conditions are being well managed.

Medical Certificates

The first week of an illness is covered by a self certificate, available from your employer or from the surgery. You should not need an appointment simply for a medical certificate during this time. After a week a doctors certificate becomes necessary in most cases.
