28th January 2010 - Phase 1 of Extension and Refurbishment of Stoke Gifford Medical Centre begins tomorrow with the installation of temporary buildings to the L hand side of the medical centre. This will provide additional rooms for both clinical and administrative tasks and will allow the vacation of various rooms during the phases of the extension project so that the work can be carried out with minimal disruption.
This is necessarily a complex project given the fact that we need to keep working during the building phase in the coming months. We do apologise in advance for any difficulties or disruption caused to both patients, staff and nearby residents. We are confident that it will result in vastly improved space and facilities at Stoke Gifford Medical Centre in the future.
9th December 2009 - Text messaging service introduced.
We have recently introduced a text messaging service allowing us to send reminders about appointments and other health promotion information. Fill out a slip in reception to access this service.
Swine flu immunisation programme is now underway for specific groups of patients.
10th August 2009 - Dr Jonathan Jelfs to retire from medical practice
Dr Jonathan Jelfs has been a partner in the practice since 1985 but is due to retire from medical practice on 5th October 2009. Dr Jelfs qualified at Bristol University Medical School in 1977 and after doing further training posts in Surrey, Edinburgh and Bristol became a GP at Whitchurch health Centre in 1982. He then joined Dr Graham Deakin in practice in Filton in 1985 where he has helped develop the practice as it is today with busy medical centres in Filton and Stoke Gifford. Dr Jelfs has decided the time is right for him to retire from general practice and to be free to pursue his other interests.
Jonathan has a keen interest in Contemporary Spirituality, especially Christian Spirituality, and was ordained as a spiritual minister (Interfaith Seminary, London) in 2005. He is especially interested in the way that an evolutionary understanding of spirituality can help the process of personal and societal transformation. He hopes to be active in this arena in the coming years. Jonathan is also hoping to have time to give to his other interests which include jazz piano, photography and web design as well as having time for walking, growing vegetables and travel.
Dr Sarah Brooks (currently working as a locum doctor) will be taking the position of Salaried Partner when Dr Jelfs leaves in October.
5th February 2009 - Planning permission
We are delighted that our planning application to provide additional accommodation by means of temporary buildings has been approved by South Gloucestershire Couincil. Planning permission has been granted for a period of up to 5 years, though we hope that the temporary buildings will not be required for anything near that length of time.
South Gloucester PCT approved our business case for a £1.7million permanent extension and refurbishment of our existing premises in the first half of 2008. The provision of temporary accommodation for a limited period of time was an essential element of the proposal. We are now working with our architects, G2 Architects, to work out the detail of the permanent scheme and in particular to identify a financial framework that will allow us to proceed to full implementation. The practice is responsible for raising the capital for the project, though the PCT has committed to a rental value to help support the required borrowing.
Stoke Gifford Medical Centre is fully committed to serving the populations of Stoke Gifford, Bradley Stoke, Harry Stoke and Filton (from our Conygre Road facility) and providing comprehensive primary care facilities from modern, well equipped premises.
20th December 2008 - Plans to extend and refurbish Stoke Gifford Medical Centre
We have been very aware, for a few years now, that our premises at Stoke Gifford MC have become cramped and outgrown. This has tended to limit our ability to offer the quality of service that would would like to offer to our patients.
Over the last 3 years or so we have been exploring various options for a major refurbishment and extension to our premises and we have reached the stage of having an outline plan. The proposal involves the installation of temporary accommodation down the left hand side of existing site followed by the building of a major extension. The temporary accommodation will provide increased space in the short term but also allow the flexibility that we will need during the building of the extension. The temporary accommodation will provide 2 additional consulting rooms, plus additional nursing and administration space and the buildings will be joined to the main building by 2 covered links.
At present a planning application for this project is being considered by South Gloucestershire Council.
We would like to emphasise that:
-
The practice remains committed to providing high quality services from both Stoke Gifford and Conygre Medical Centres.
-
With a growing population and increasing need for services, there is a need to expand our premises.
-
The temporary accommodation is the first stage of a much bigger (permanent) project.
-
The planning application is for up to 5 years, but hopefully the temporary buildings will not be needed for more than 2-3 years

- Nurse run clinics are not available during the new extended hours
- The excellent Out of Hours Service provided by Brisdoc (based at Southmead Hospital Outpatient Department) will still be available for urgent medical problems outside normal surgery times.
