Clinics & Services

Many health-related activities take place within the practice, as well as the usual appointments to see the doctor or nurse. If you need further information or wish to make an appointment please speak to the receptionist. These activities include:

Health Promotion

We are keen to promote health and to prevent illness where possible. You may therefore be asked to answer a health promotion sheet or be invited to attend a health promotion activity such as a blood pressure check, advice about diet or exercise etc.

Contraception/Family Planning

All of the doctors and some of the practice nurses are able to offer a wide range of contraception advice and care. Simply make an appointment in the usual way to discuss these matters

Well Woman Program

We encourage women to see the practice nurse about cervical smears, how to examine the breasts, pre-pregnancy advice, how to manage the menopause etc. It is particularly important that you attend for routine smears. You will be informed when these are due.

Smoking Cessation

We offer support and advice yo help you stop smoking. Please complete this form before your first appointment with the Stop Smoking Advisor

Having a baby

The practice offers a program of care for expectant mothers, in conjunction with community midwives and Southmead Hospital obstetric unit. If you think you are pregnant then arrange to see the doctor in the first instance, during normal surgery.

Child Health

There is a full program of child health care in the practice involving doctors, nurses, and health visitors. Routine examinations, development assessments and immunisations are offered at appropriate intervals at our child health clinic. We will inform you when these are due. The health visitors also run a well baby clinic locally for routine weighing, feeding advice etc. Ask for details.

Minor Surgery

Simple minor surgical procedures can be carried out in our well-equipped treatment room by arrangement with one of our doctors.

Travel and Health

If you are travelling abroad be sure to pick up one of our leaflets offering advice about health precautions. If you need immunisations or malaria tablets then please discuss this with the nurse as soon as possible, 3 -6 months in advance especially if your travel programme is complicated. Please note there will be a charge for some travel immunisations

Immunisations

See the practice nurse if you need immunisations against tetanus, polio, rubella etc.

Diabetes and Asthma

It is important that those with diabetes or asthma receive regular care and you will be offered a clinic or review appointment as necessary.

We are keen to promote health through education and keep a range of free literature. Please see display in the waiting area.

Nurse Clinics

You may make an appointment to see the nurse for a variety of things. These include:

• Stitch removal

• Ear Syringing 
• Contraception

• COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

Medical Certificates

You will not normally require a doctor’s certificate for absences from work for less than one week. If you need a self-certificate this must be obtained from your employer or is available from the receptionist if you are self-employed. For absences over one week you will need to be seen by the doctor who will issue one. There is a charge if you need a private medical certificate.

Medical Education

The practice is involved with medical education. So on occasions a student doctor may be with the doctor. We understand that there may be occasions when you may wish to be seen without a student present. When the student doctor is present you will be told beforehand and offered the opportunity to be seen alone.

Test Results

Sometimes the doctor will have asked you to attend the surgery for results; if so it is usually best to check with the receptionist that these are available before seeing the doctor. Otherwise simply call in or telephone for results preferably after 10am.

Please do not ask the receptionists the meaning of the results, as this is not part of their training. 

Please call between 11am and 3.30pm to enquire about your test results as our reception staff will have more time to deal with your request between these times.

Note that the practice has a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection and we will only release test results to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results.

When you take your test you will be told how long it will be before the results are returned to the practice.

It is your responsibility to check your results and to make an appointment to discuss them with your doctor if your are advised to do so.
